Goodbye horde, hello Zimbra

I finally gave up trying to keep my hordeinstallation alive. It's been alot of work installing and upgrading the package and every time I've failed to retain my data. I was recommended Zimbra by a friend. It turns out it's a complete suite with mta, imap, spam- and virusscanner. This meant that I'd have to give up my carefully configured mail services. After bracing myself for a number of days, I got to it.

Pretty quickly I found an installation method that would enable me to keep my base system and apache installation on their wiki:  building Zimbra on Gentoo. It's a bit outdated, but with some modifications it's working fine. In case I see a request of interest for it here I could update it. Let me know.

After adding postfix and changing port number for ssh and a couple of other tweaks it's just the way I want it. Lovely.

Note of interest ... ;) I looked into Zimbra a long while ago, but i don't think i saw those instructions at the time. Well if you can update their wiki i would be glad to have another try and test it out, even if i am not into the IT anymore.

I find installing a Debian

I find installing a Debian chroot on Gentoo hardly a viable solution. This means you have to monitor 2 OS for security updates and maintenance :S I just read a promising review about Axigen in Linux Format and I've been testing it since. I must say I'm impressed with their quick support and they even provide a Gentoo ebuild: http://www.axigen.com/

Hi Andreas, We're using Exchange at work and i'm looking for a replacement for it. I would love to see the instructions updated for the latest Zimbra. You've installed it in a chroot environment but i like to try installing it in a virtualization environment like kvm, openvz or xen and create some howtos about it. greetings, Norbert.

Update is on the way...

jwickers: I've posted on their wiki now and I'll update it in a few days if there's no objections. =)

Aniruddha: Well, I don't use gentoo to *avoid* updating labor and I've been curious about debian for a while now so this suits my needs fine for now. We all have our different goals =). I will check out axigen though. Looks like a nice tip!

Norbert: Unfortunately I have no experience with kvm or their likes but it's certainly a good idea to run it virtualized.

@Andreas? Another problem I have with Zimbra is that it is expensive (in comparison with Exchange server). And I do think that a commercial company should make the installation as hassle free as possible @Norbert Where do use your exchange server for? Is it an smtp server? Do you also use it to share calenders?

The update is in place. Have fun and please comment if there's any errors.

Updated again

I discovered that the logger needs the command 'killall' to be setup properly. Therefore the debian package psmisc can be installed to satisfy that.

Thanks Andrea, like others in this comment thread, I've been considering Zimbra for a while and your reference helped me a lot. Thank you so much! Cheers, Ed
